Many denim pieces including denim jackets are stonewashed to give them a worn-out appearance that would usually be achieved by years of constant wear.  In addition to this, the stonewashing process makes your usually stiff denim clothing softer and more flexible.  Traditionally, the stonewashing process, like its name suggests, puts the denim into a large washer filled with water and large stones and rotated.  As the stones pound the denim, the fabric fibers soften and result in the worn out stonewashed denim look.

Many popular fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Guess? also work with denim in their fashion pieces.  Calvin Klein created some of the world’s first “designer jeans” and continues to modify them as time and fashion rolls onwards.  Designer jeans tend to be specially designed for either men or women and are usually more fitted than your standard run-of-the-mill jeans.  However, recently more relaxed cuts of designer jeans have been hitting the stores.  Like all designer clothing, they typically feature the designer’s name and/or logo in a prominent position such as the back or front pockets.  These famous denim designers also have on their racks special designer denim jackets, which are usually made of higher grade denim and, like their jeans, feature the designer’s name or logo somewhere prominent, often on the back or on the breast pockets.

Whatever future high fashion may hold, one thing is certain and that is that denim will never go out of style.  Whether or not it is seen on the runways in Paris and Milan is immaterial as denim jeans and other denim clothing has proven to be a fashion that has lasted in time memorial; and it’s not likely to be going anywhere anytime soon.

The material spandex is also known as elastane in Europe and is a material famous for its stretchiness.  It is more elastic than its next closest competitor – rubber.  It was invented in the late 1950s by American chemist Joseph Shivers.  Unlike many other materials, spandex isn’t derived from the actual fibers that the material is made of.  It is an anagram of the word ‘expands’, a tribute to its extreme elasticity.

The most famous spandex brand is Lycra.  Spandex is used to produce articles of clothing where elasticity is valued to fit the article of clothing snugly to the human body.  Spandex is usually used to produce sports and dancewear but is also used in everything from bra straps to swimsuits.  Basically anything that requires material to stretch significantly is likely to contain spandex.

The most famous article of clothing containing spandex are probably spandex pants.  These are pants usually used by dancers or athletes to either flatter their bodies or make them more streamlined for competition respectively.  Spandex pants are often also used by athletes or people exercising as compression clothing.  These spandex pants promote blood circulation and increase the flow of oxygen to the athlete’s muscles.  For those who are not so comfortable with wearing tight clothing because of supposedly unsightly body shapes, black spandex pants can greatly reduce the effect of wearing such tight clothing.

Arctic jackets are hooded jackets designed especially for extremely cold climates.  Arctic jackets are also known as anoraks in the United Kingdom and parkas in the United States.  These jackets are usually used in snowy environments and are specially lined to provide maximum protection from wind chill and extreme temperatures.  Arctic jacket colours range to both extremes.  They are either black to absorb any warmth from the sun that a wearer will experience while in extreme conditions or brightly coloured to be easily spotted against snow.  Arctic jackets are rarely white because not only does white reflect warmth from the sun, it also blends in with the snowy surroundings, making it difficult for search and rescue if needed.

Although all jackets can be worn by both sexes, jackets tend to be customized for the gender that will be wearing it.  This means that a men’s black jacket won’t look its best on a woman and vice versa.  However, every style of jacket is made for both genders so even though a black denim jacket specially designed for a male won’t look as good on a woman, females are still able to purchase the same style of black denim jacket but one that looks better and fits better than a men’s one.

Nowadays, a lot of people wear swim shorts which are also sometimes referred to as board shorts.  Swim shorts originated as a fashion for men, but now they have grown to also be part of standard women’s beach and swimwear.  Both sexes wear them to cover up and preserve a little modesty as the rest of the world frolics in the age of bikinis, speedos and body-exposing fashion.
Men’s swim shorts are usually longer than women’s swim shorts and come down to the knee.  They can be made of any quick drying material, but you will usually find polyester or nylon swim shorts in your local surf store.  Their other name “board shorts” comes from the fact that they are usually worn while participating in water sports that involve a board such as surfing.  In Australia, the term “boardies” is used to refer to swim shorts and in South Africa they are commonly referred to as “baggies”.  Although swim shorts usually come in bright colours with Hawaiian patterns, black swim shorts are popular because they don’t turn up with stains from everyday wear and tear at the beach.  Swim shorts have taken their fashion past the beaches and into everyday life including the skate park in many parts of the world, especially North America and Australia.
On the other hand, women’s swim shorts tend to be fairly short although a few girls still adopt the knee-length look.  It is less common to see women wearing swim shorts away from the beach than it is for men.  Most women wear swim shorts to preserve their modesty by covering up the skin that’s exposed on the lower body by normal bikinis.  Women almost always wear bikini bottoms under their swim shorts, although it is possible to wear them as is.
